A Rebours, by J K Huysmann. Added by Michael Wood,

Against the grain – tide – nature – odds etc. 1884 novel (and downright testament) by the French symbolist and “decadent”, Joris-Karl Huysmans. Anti(?)hero, Jean Des Esseintes serves as tool to identify faults and problems of that time — and any other. Very much devoted to experiencing art, culture and lifestyle, in the hope of self-enlightenment — or at least self-gratificiation. In its time, both notorious to many and acclaimed by some. Very likely to some extent model and inspiration behind oscar wilde’s more public-eye (and even more scandalous), ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’
