The limited edition screen printed series ‘Iconic Bibliophile -Fungi Portraits’ coerces iconoplastic and aesthetic vocabulary, questioning the concept of a man who has turned into something literally ‘picturesque’. Mitrentse introduces fungi into portraiture from the dynasty of the Plantin-Moretus Museum Collection in Belgium, honouring its most important printers Christoffel Plantin and Jan Moretus. Her interest lies in the contemporary use of “iconic”, the glib way people in the news are invested with properties that render them miraculous, superhuman and magical; an idealism stressed by the use of silver & gold ink. The portraits reveal a collective longing, a dark psychological aspect of both the sublime and the ridiculous that permeates society, hidden in myths and popular culture. The parasitical nature of Fungi lets them live off their ‘host’, suggesting the absolute certainty of decay, the absurdity of morality and a divine beauty born from mutation.
